The venue
Our performances take place in the garden (left) of the Abbey House Hotel which is in a quiet part of the beautiful and historic village of Abbotsbury. The animals on the hill sometimes distract from the action while the birds on the millpond behind join in the choruses!
You are invited to bring a picnic and to dress warm rather than posh. The hotel usually sells Pimms, coffee and fruit juice before the performance and during the interval. If you want to stay in the Abbey House Hotel, or have a meal there before the performance, early booking is recommended. Restaurants, pubs, bed-and-breakfasts, art galleries and shops are listed on the village website.
Abbotsbury may be one of the oldest Christian sites in Britain. St Catherine's Chapel (right) may stand on a site far older. A local group, the Abbotsbury Heritage Research Project, is exploring the village's dense and relatively unexplored history with the help of a grant from the Local Heritage Initiative. New material appears on this site as work goes forward.
The village is famous for its Swannery, where you can walk among the nests; the Sub-Tropical Gardens full of exotic plants brought by explorers and travellers from C17 onward, and the ancient Tithe Barn which is one of the largest in England.
The village is on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast with direct access to the Chesil Beach and is a great place for walking, diving, sailing and sea fishing either from the beach or from boats out of Weymouth.
