Verdi's La Traviata ('The Fallen Woman')
8 pm, 2 October 2010 at the Electric Palace, South St, Bridport, Dorset UK
Fully staged and costumed performance of Traviata sung in an English translation.
La Traviata, set in Paris, is one of the most popular and accessible of Verdi's masterpieces. Inspired by Dumas' The Lady of the Camellias, this universal classic tells the moving story of Violetta's transformation from a hedonistic courtesan into a tragic heroine. A tale of hope, despair and romantic love at its most eloquent. Abbotsbury Music is presenting this new production by The Garden Opera Company indoors in the restored Electric Palace, South Street, Bridport, which was built originally as an opera house.
We have gone indoors, driven by the horrid weather. For the first ten years of our outdoor operas we could rely on tolerable summer evenings, but in the last three years things have changed. We admire the Dunkirk spirit in our audiences but a roof might be better!
Our performance will be part of The Garden Opera Company's British tour 2010.
