Donizetti's Don Pasquale
4, 6, 7 July 2008 in Abbotsbury, Dorset, UK
Outdoor, fully staged and costumed performance of Don Pasquale sung in an English translation.
Don Pasqale is a rich old bachelor with a nephew for whom he has chosen a bride. But Ernesto refuses to obey his uncle because he loves Norina. So Pasquale decides to punish him by getting married himself and thus disinheriting his nephew.
Ernesto's friend, Dr Malatesto, suggests that his own sister - who happens to be Norina - would be an excellent choice for wife. Don Pasquale is most impressed by this demure damsel and readily agrees to marry her.
Malatesto sets up a fake marriage and, suddenly, Norina turns into a capricious termagent with extravagant ways and regrettable manners, who keeps her supposed husband at a resentful distance.
Don Pasquale is not thrilled by the high maintenance of his new wife and we go from there to a happy ending via all the silly twists and turns of opera buffa.
The music is delicious and there are lots of jokes - perfect for Garden Opera's style. We look forward to some startling costumes by Parisian designer Dulcie Best.
We were given permission to use the beautiful Erté image by SevenArts Ltd for which we are very grateful. It seems that Erté's favourite things were cats and the opera.
